Gilbertown celebrates Constitution Day

CONSTITUTION DAY - September 17th

It is a federal holiday that recognizes the date, September 17, 1787 when the US Constitution was signed by the delegates. 

Here's a little trivia about our constitution.

1)At 81 years old, Benjamin Franklin was the oldest delegate. He was in fact so weak that he had to be carried to the convention so he could be there to inspire support and soothe tempers.

2)Location! Location! Location! The US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were both signed at the same place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania due to its nearness to all 13 states.

3)The US Constitution is considered the least amended constitution with only 27 amendments to it as of this year even though there have been well over 11,500 proposals made.  This is mostly due to the steps required to pass an amendment which include having a proposal receive 2/3s of the vote of both the Senate and House of Representatives and then 3/4s of all the states must ratify it. That’s a lot of people to have to agree on the same thing!

A Modern Book Club for a Modern College

Coastal Reads is a new book club for students, faculty, and staff of Coastal Alabama Community College!

Book club members will meet on the last Tuesday of September, October, and November at 3:30pm. You can join a group in-person in any of our libraries or LRCs, or listen to the presentation online with a Teams link that will be provided. 

Don't have time to finish the book, but still want to join our Coastal Reads community? Each title this semester has a movie or show available for streaming. No time for that? You are always welcome to come listen and meet new friends!

Let's celebrate the 4th of July by continuing to learn more about it.

The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson.

Did you know? John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826—the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.  What other founding father also died on an anniversary of its adoption?

Learning more about Juneteenth, the newest federal holiday

Juneteenth, the federal holiday also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, is on Sunday, June 19. Last year, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was added in 1983. 

A portmanteau of the date it's celebrated, Juneteenth commemorates the freedom of enslaved Black people in the US.  

"The emancipation of enslaved Black Americans didn't mark the end of America's work to deliver on the promise of equality; it only marked the beginning," Biden said just before signing the Juneteenth holiday into law. "To honor the true meaning of Juneteenth, we have to continue toward that promise because we've not gotten there yet."

Commemorates the adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777. 

Flag Day is observed as an annual holiday to honor the flag and celebrate its history.

 

MYSTERY or THRILLER, What's the difference?

Mysteries and Thrillers are similar but not the same.  While both genres contain some suspense and action, mysteries usually begin with a crime to be solved that requires their main characters, and the reader, to figure out the guilty party.  However in thrillers, the villain is often revealed to the hero and the reader early on, and so the story revolves around the race to stop them from doing evil.

Let's celebrate Pi Day with a slice of pie

 

On March 14, math lovers from all walks of life around the world celebrate Pi Day, as a way to commemorate the mathematical sign pi.  The date written numerically as 3/14 match the first three digits of the never-ending number: 3.14 

This unique holiday is an annual opportunity for math teachers in schools across the country to talk about the infinite digits of Pi and for bakeries and grocery stores to sell pies at a discount for this day.

Friday, January 21st

Due to multiple area closures and the potential for icy road conditions, particularly from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, all campuses of Coastal Alabama Community College will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 21.  Aviation evening classes, however, will continue as scheduled tomorrow night.  Be safe!

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY - January 17, 2022

The third Monday in January is set aside to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., perhaps the most important figure in the history of Civil Rights in the United States. Strongly influenced by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King advocated the use of nonviolent means to end racial segregation. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964 and died four years later at the hands of an assassin on April 4, 1968.
